Huonville High School

Huonville High School is a public, co-educational comprehensive high school offering a secondary education for students from Grade 7-12 in the small town of Huonville, Tasmania, Australia.
OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Huonville High School is a co-educational comprehensive high school offering a secondary education for students from Grade 7-12. Servicing a rural community, the school is situated in the township of Huonville located 42 kilometres south of Hobart. Huonville is the active centre of the Huon Municipality (population 12,905). It is a community of diverse socio-economic circumstances and interests. The school is the lead school for the Huon Valley Trade Training Centre (HVTTC).

The school began as the Huonville Area School in 1940. At that time it was the only secondary school south of Hobart. It became a comprehensive high school in 1957. For many years, 90% of students have travelled to school via a substantial network of bus services.
THE STAFF
Huonville High has a staff quota of approximately 32 full-time equivalents. The
teaching staff consists of a Principal and 3 Assistant Principals, 4 Advanced Skills Teachers, and approximately 28 teachers, including a Librarian. The school also accesses specialist services of two School Psychologists (Guidance Officer), two Social Workers and education support provided by Learning Services South. The school has a School Business Manager and an ancillary staff of approximately 16 which includes office/ administration staff, grounds and maintenance staff, cleaning staff, a laboratory technician, a library assistant, teacher aides and a canteen manager. There is a Coordinator for the HVTTC

THE STUDENTS
The school is predicting an enrolment of approximately 460 in 2016. This includes 60 students enrolled in year 11/12. The school serves a dispersed district with the majority of students enrolling from the associated primary schools (Glen Huon, Cygnet, Franklin, Geeveston and Huonville).

A steady but conservative increase in numbers each year is predicted and this reflects the rural/dormitory diversity of the community. Since 2002 there has been a significant influx of families from the mainland looking for a “sea/tree change”. With approximately 19% of students identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, indigenous culture is valued and celebrated within the school.

Past students have a continuing record of success in both senior secondary and tertiary study. Although most students have to travel to Hobart to complete Years 11 and 12, improved retention rates are most encouraging. In the past few years approximately 80% of students have continued their education. Completion of year 12 and attainment of qualifications is the aim for all students.
